What does a chiropractor do?
We have all suffered headaches, back pain or an injury at one point in our lives. Pain is the alarm system of the body to warn the brain about damage or dysfunction to a structure or location. The brain/body transmits these pain signals through the nervous system to let you know that something is out of balance or needs attention.
On occasion, we ignore these signals or we use medication to suppress the pain information, but this does not eliminate the cause. The dysfunction remains present. It is the chiropractor’s job to find and correct these dysfunctions.
Why do we suffer from back, neck or shoulders complaints? If we ignore our bodies alarm signals and take no action to remedy the complaint it can in some cases lead our bodies to compensate and our symptoms can get worse. When we do not take action to help our body to heal from an injury or suppress the symptoms with medication our body will either try to compensate around the complaint or send more alarm bells ringing (pain) through the nervous system. A chiropractors goal is to look a the body holistically and discover why the complaint is not healing and how to improve the brain and body communication.
Take the difference in sensitivity between your palms and the bottoms of your feet. The bottom of your feet is much more sensitive in most people.
The answer is simple. Our feet are hidden most of the time in socks and shoes, so the skin of the foot receives less stimulation (nerve stimulation) than the hands. The part of the brain that corresponds to the sensations of the feet becomes smaller and smaller over time, after all you require less ‘storage space’.
The same happens with other parts of the brain. Another example: a stiff back. If a back joint is barely moved, it will not send any stimuli to the brain. The storage space for communication with the back remains empty and a ‘blind spot’ is created. Now you sometimes move a lot, for example during a company outing to paintball. That’s where things often go wrong.
Did you know
That chiropractic is the third largest medical treatment in the world with approximately 65,000 chiropractors?
After an initial examination, the chiropractor will determine where the cause of the problem lies. Through multiple treatments, the communication issues between the nervous system and the joints are eliminated, so that the healing process is set in motion and the complaints decrease. The optimal functioning of the nervous system also has a positive effect on your overall health. For example, more energy, a better night’s sleep and better posture.
